Woman dies after shooting at Durham apartment complex, police say

A woman was killed in a shooting at a Durham apartment complex early Monday morning.

According to the Durham Police Department, officers responded to a shooting around 2 a.m. in the Rochelle Manor apartments near Wake Forest Highway.

Police said they found a woman who had been shot at the scene. The woman was taken to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The deceased has been identified as Linda Michelle Kenan, 51 of Durham 

The WRAL Breaking News Tracker arrived to an active scene. Police were putting down evidence markers and taking photos outside the apartment building, and there was a bullet hole in one of the windows. Investigators were going in and out of an upstairs apartment.

The nephew of the woman who was shot and killed told WRAL News the victim was very involved in her community and called her death a huge loss.

Kenan was an active member in the community and worked along side the 5K Foundation to help organize, promote and support community programs and events. The 5K Foundation released a statement following the untimely death of Linda Michelle Kenan, “5K Foundation, Inc. is heartbroken by the senseless killing of our beloved family member and community ambassador, Michelle Kenan. Michelle was dedicated to helping us organize and promote programs that fight against gang and gun violence in communities like Rochelle Manor and across Durham. She was a mother, sister, aunt, friend, and a source of love and support to so many.

This senseless crime has taken the life of a woman who gave so much to her family and community. Violence like this continues to destroy the foundation of our community and leaves another child without their mother. This has to stop. We will continue honoring Michelle’s legacy by creating safe spaces, mentoring youth, and working to prevent the very violence that took her life.”

The shooting is the fifth WRAL News has covered in Durham since Friday.

Late Sunday night, a man inside a vehicle was shot near the intersection of Chapel Hill Road and Anderson Street in Durham. Police said he had life-threatening injuries.

Over the weekend, there were two other shootings in Durham. On Friday, a woman was shot on Century Oaks Drive, and on Saturday a woman was shot on Hoover Road. Both women were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. In the Hoover Road shooting, a man was also injured by flying glass during the incident. 

On Friday night, a man was injured in a drive-by shooting on Merrick Street.
