The man was identified as 28-year-old Abdul-Jalil Burnette.

Burnette's grandmother, Vanissa Gibbs, was devastated. She said he was "a sweet kid."

"I'm feeling awful," she said.

Burnette's family members told WRAL News his brother was the person killed in an August shooting at a Durham hotel.

"I'm against gun violence, period," Gibbs said. "There's too many people out here being killed, so I'm against it."

The area between Raynor Street and North Miami Boulevard is closed while investigators look into the circumstances.

Recently, east Durham residents have expressed concerns about shootings to Durham City Council and played audio recordings of gunfire heard from residents in their neighborhoods.
