Police: Man charged in bank robbery, bomb threat, officer-involved shooting

A man faces charges in an armed bank robbery in Zebulon and for firing shots at police officers hours later in Rocky Mount, according to officials.

According to police, the man, Willie McGee Jr., was driving the semi-truck when he left from a Zebulon bank robbery on Friday just after 11:30 a.m.

Police said McGee gave a written note to an employee at the First Citizens Bank on Wakelon Street that said his vehicle had an explosive device inside it.

Zebulon police were able to contact the company that owned the truck, and was able to track the location to the Hobby Lobby parking lot on Sutters Creek Boulevard in Rocky Mount. Zebulon police then contacted Rocky Mount officers to notify them of the truck's location. When officers arrived around 4:15 p.m., Rocky Mount police said McGee got out and fired shots at the officers. 

Rocky Mount police said officers returned fire and shot McGee, 42. He was taken to the hospital. On Saturday afternoon, officers said McGee was "stable" at the hospital. 

Upon his release from the hospital, McGee will be charged with robbery, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm and discharging a weapon to incite fear.

The State Bureau of Investigation's bomb squad found no explosives in the semi-truck.

The SBI will look into the case, which is standard procedure when an officer fires a weapon.
