I was working with a couple of pretty critical details when I planned my family's five-day trip to the North Carolina mountains this summer. We'd never been to this part of North Carolina - the Beech Mountain, Boone and Blowing Rock area. And we're not particularly outdoorsy people. Camping was out. And major hikes through the mountains and forests weren't going to be on the schedule either.

But we'd been to Asheville to see Biltmore and other family-friendly destinations. And I was eager to travel to this part of the state, which has so much to offer for tourists and families.

So, apologies to longtime visitors of this region of North Carolina. This post might not be for you. But if you're not particularly outdoorsy - and contemplating a trip to the mountains with your family - consider this your jumping off point. Here's how we spent five days in the Beech Mountain, Boone and Blowing Rock region.

Day 1: Beech Mountain

We opted to stay in Beech Mountain, a small ski resort town high up in the moutains with plenty of lodging options. Our condo sat right in the middle of this tiny downtown, making it easy for us to walk around and explore a bit.
Our very first stop was Buckeye Recreation Center, a 23,000-square-foot facility that offers lots of indoor and outdoor activities, including fishing, canoeing, hiking and more. Best of all, most of it is free.

We came for the fishing and canoeing on Buckeye Lake. It was free to sign out two canoes, along with four life jackets, from the recreation center. Pedal boats also were available. Pro tip, however, for the boat rental: Get there early as there aren't many boats and they can go fast.

We drove down to the lake, unlocked our canoes and spent about an hour on the water, navigating around the pretty small lake and looking into the incredibly clear water for fish and other creatures.

After that, we found the perfect spot to fish. We weren't as lucky as others, who seemed to be reeling in fish after fish, but it was a quiet way - and beautiful place - to spend a morning.

After a picnic lunch, we went back to the rec center to check out its outdoor Adventure Playground, a really creative play structure that features all kinds of rope climbing opportunities.

We stuck in Beech Mountain for dinner that night, picking up some pizza and wings from the Brick Oven Restaurant, a local favorite for more than two decades, where you'll also find putt putt and cookies as big as your head.

Day 2: Gem mining, Valle Crucis and swimming at Elk River Falls

It was raining when we woke up, so instead of immediately heading to Elk River Falls for a morning swim, we went for gem mining at Sugar Creek Gem Mine.

You'll find lots of gem mining options in this part of North Carolina, and I'm sure other spots are just as fun. But we really enjoyed the friendly service and low-key experience at Sugar Creek. There was no attempt to sell us on turning our gems into jewelry. Instead, the focus was on the hunt.

We spent $32 for a two-gallon bucket, which my daughters shared. Outside at the flume-line, they discovered all kinds of gems, including rubies and sapphires, and had a blast. Inside, a friendly staffer helped them identify each piece.

Once we wrapped up at Sugar Creek, it was lunchtime, so we headed down the road to the Ham Shoppe in nearby Valle Crucis. We'd passed the sign, which claimed the shop had the best sandwiches we'd ever eat, on our way into Beech Mountain and couldn't pass it up.
The sandwiches, which you pick up to go, lived up to the sign. We unwrapped them at Valle Crucis Community Park, which is just a few miles down the road. While there, we checked out the river, where lots of families were swimming, and the playground.
Then we made the short walk to the location of the original Mast General Store and its annex, where we loaded up on some candy.

By then, the skies had cleared, so we finally made it to our original destination - Elk River Falls. From the parking lot to the falls, it's less than a half-mile walk - perfect for my family of non-hikers.

Waterfall swimming can be extremely dangerous - and deadly. In fact, two people have died at Elk River Falls already this summer.

So here's what we didn't do: Jump off the actual falls or swim in the pool below the waterfall.

But there are very safe ways to enjoy this beautiful spot - and even get in the water. Romantic Asheville shares some tips on where to find the safe swimming areas here. N.C. Parks also has waterfall safety tips. Following every safety rule, my girls had a blast swimming in the ice cold water and climbing on the boulders along with the other families gathered there.

Day 3: Tweetsie Railroad and High Gravity Adventure Park

We spent our third day exploring Tweetsie, the western-themed theme park. My older daughter really enjoyed the High Gravity Adventure Park next door. I wrote about that earlier this week.

Day 4: Grandfather Mountain and Blowing Rock

I wrote yesterday about our amazing visit to Grandfather Mountain, famous for its Mile High Swinging Bridge and spectacular views.

After lunch, the skies got ready to open up, so we headed to Blowing Rock for some window shopping and ice cream at Kilwin's Chocolate, a national chain that has some really tasty treats.

We're not big shoppers, so after walking through a few shops, we spent a bit of time, between rain drops, at the playground at Blowing Rock Memorial Park, which is right on Main Street. And we also browsed the shelves of the fantastic book sale at the beautiful Blowing Rock Community Library. (When my family shops, we tend to buy books.)

Day 5: Boone

Before we headed back to Raleigh, we spent an hour or so walking around downtown Boone and eating lunch at the really yummy Stick Boy Kitchen.

I know our trip to this part of the state barely scraped the surface of the region - which means we'll just have to go back. Feel free to share your favorite mountain destinations in the comments.
