DURHAM, N.C. — The sprawling outdoor exhibit Hideaway Woods at the Museum of Life and Science is now open and guests will notice a few updates.

The biggest thing you will probably notice is the absence of the tube slide. The museum removed it "out of an abundance of caution," but plans to install a new slide once it is delivered this fall.

"We understand this may be a disappointment, but custom exhibit pieces take time to produce and global supply chain issues add uncertainty," the museum said via its Facebook page.

In addition to the slide, the museum has also repaired and replaced netting, siding and other pieces throughout its many treehouses.

Hideaway Woods offers two acres of outdoor fun that even includes a man-made stream for wading. (Tip: Bring a full change of clothes and an old towel!) There are also rope bridges and lots of trees and coves.

Hideaway Woods opened in 2015 and continues to be a great place for family outdoor fun.
Know before you go:
  • Hideaway Woods is free with admission to the museum, which is $23 for adults and $18 for kids ages 3 to 12. Museum admission is free for members.
  • There are no weight or age limits.
  • There is only one way in and out of the exhibit. It is bounded by a fence. The Young Explorers area (for children ages 0 to 6 years old) has another fence.
  • The Museum of Life and Science is open Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Museum members get access an hour early each day at 9 a.m.
