RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh is looking for rising sixth to eighth graders to join its fall cohort of the Neighborhood Ecology Corps.
According to the city, the Neighborhood Ecology Corps is a free after-school program focused on exploring nature and the community in order to develop environmentally literate citizens. Students take part in weekly meetings through a combination of video conferencing and socially distant gatherings at Walnut Creek Wetland Park.

It all begins with a week-long summer immersion camp, which runs in-person from Aug. 9 to Aug. 13. During the camp, they'll take part in nature games and interactive team-building activities.

Starting the second week of September, they'll meet weekly from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Students earn a $200 stipend once they complete the first year and can take part the following years while in middle school.

Activities include outdoor excursions, such as field trips to local and state parks, museums and preserves; journaling as they reflect on their experiences in nature; environmental stewardship; and opportunities to learn more about education and career opportunities. (An open house with more information about the program was held over the weekend, but it was not a requirement to participate.)
