The coronavirus has affected public schooling across the nation, but that's not stopping teachers from reaching their students. 

Gaston County teachers and the Gaston Literacy Council are highlighting the importance of reading during this time away from in-person schooling by posting videos to Facebook of them reading children’s books.

A lot of students in the county wouldn’t have access to literature if it weren’t for the Facebook videos. These teachers don’t want their students to regress, so they hope these videos will encourage students to continue reading every day.

Many of them don't have access to literature so by us reading stories to them were given them that access  Because the Corona virus has affected in person schooling In North Carolina many elementary school teachers and Gaston County are finding creative ways to engage with their students like I wish I could see you soon reading Children's books on Facebook Kathy Prevette is a kindergarten teacher at Gardner Park Elementary She says her principal Jamie Wallis came up with the idea in order to make the transition toe online schooling easier for students Less rates and stories of these Children will have something to look for to concede Our faces won't worry as much because being away from school their stress that happens to these kids You may not realize it but not seeing their teacher not have a net routine It's hard on them Second grade teacher at Pinewood Elementary Hannah Adams says Not being in school is Justus hard for teachers as it is for students My classroom is like my happy place It's way more than just a school so it's been hard like I haven't seen my kids in a month  I have not been in my classroom doing my thing for a whole month Adams decided to post reading videos on her personal Facebook page to remain connected with her current and former students and to give them a routine consistency is key with anything and everything on especially in those lower grades Kindergarten 1st 2nd grade those air critical years Hearing someone reading is Justice Important Slash as then picking up a book themselves Although this transition has been hard for Adams knowing that her videos are making a difference in at least one child's life makes it all worth it That's kind of what I've had to remind myself of when I get like really down that one of my kids former kids a child anywhere is hearing on adult read and that's heart warming to know that I'm reaching them somehow Some way It's not just teachers posting these videos The Gas in Literacy Council has also gotten involved Mary Daly is a former fourth grade teacher and the co coordinator of the Literacy Councils Reading Soulmates program which provides students reading below grade level with one on one attention Because volunteers can't read with the students in person Deeley says Facebook videos are the next best thing Literacy is so important for so many for everyone because of the body like that it provides So we're just trying to really engage the community and just expense Children possible to more literacy Thanks for reading Pete the Cat I love my white shoes with me They need to hear stories They need to hear the literature They need to hear how things were written I think it's super important no matter where they are what they're doing that they continue to read every day whether it's online or whether it's actually it's important to keep reading even when you aren't in school and gassed in counties I'm Caroline Boyer reporting
