DUNN, N.C. — A second person in the Triangle has died of COVID-19, the illness associated with the new coronavirus.

The person, whose name was not released, was a Johnston County resident in their 60s and had underlying medical complications, according to the county report on the death. He had been being treated at Harnett Health’s Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn.

North Carolina has seen four deaths from the virus, three residents, including Adrian Grubbs, of Harnett County, who died Wednesday. The first coronavirus death in the state was reported on Tuesday in Cabarrus County. A Virginia resident also died of the virus while passing through the state this week, state officials said.

“We are saddened to hear of this loss to our Johnston County community and extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones. Although most people will have mild to moderate symptoms with this virus, some will have a more severe illness. This reminds us all to do our part to decrease the chance of infection and stop the spread of the virus by following social distancing recommendations and staying home to the extent possible," said Johnston County Health Director Dr. Marilyn Pearson.

She pointed out that those at the highest risk of serious complications from coronavirus are:

  • 65 years of age or older
  • live in a nursing home or long-term care facility
  • have a high-risk condition that includes:
    • chronic lung disease or moderate to severe asthma
    • heart disease with complications
    • compromised immune system
    • severe obesity - body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher
    • other underlying medical conditions, particularly if not well controlled, such as diabetes, renal failure or liver disease
