RAEFORD, N.C. — George Floyd had roots in North Carolina. Born in Fayetteville, he moved to Texas as a child.
While cities around the country have held protests in his memory, his home community is also grieving his loss. A mural of him was recently painted on a storefront on Hay Street in Fayetteville.

One of three memorial services planned for Floyd will take place in Raeford, on Saturday, June 6, at the Cape Fear Conference B Headquarters.

A public viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will be followed later in the day by a prive, family-only memorial.

George Floyd's connection to North Carolina is one reason his body is being brought here for this memorial service.

"That's were he was raised up at. That's were he grew up at. That's just his stomping ground," said his sister, Bridgette Floyd.

Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin and county commissioners are working closely with the family to make sure the event is safe and memorable.

"Everyone here is doing everything they can in this community to make sure we embrace this family. And on Saturday, I expect it's going to be very peaceful. Very loving. This is about lifting the life of George," said Peterkin.

Another memorial service will take place in Minneapolis, where Floyd died while in the custody of the local police.

The third memorial takes place Monday in Houston before he's buried there.

He loved Texas, according to his sister. He called Houston the 'H-town.' For his sister, the 'H-town' was Hoke County, where some of those childhood memories took place.
