Triangle-area senior citizens on Tuesday will be honored at the 65th Annual Golden Years Holiday Celebration sponsored by WRAL and Capitol Broadcasting Company. Here's a look at the history of the event, first held in the WRAL Studios in 1958.

Good morning everyone. I'm Deborah morgen. Before we begin this year's holiday celebration, we thought we would take a look back at some memorable moments from past golden Years. We hope you enjoy these best of clips. It was in 1958 as general manager of W. R A. L. T. V. And chairman of the Raleigh Parks and Recreation advisory board. That fred first implemented his idea of giving a christmas luncheon to Raleigh's three senior citizen clubs, having served most of his life as a leader and champion for the Raleigh Parks and Recreation department. He's carried on his family's tradition of giving back to the community. A Golden Years member once wrote in a letter of appreciation to fred, just know that you've been responsible for the beginning of this celebration. Thank you for all you're doing for all you have done for us and the many things you have done for the city of Raleigh, are you ready? Thank you. Wait a minute, wait a minute. Don't, don't come in. How many more measures? Just a minute. I want to get something in here. Now. Front, front, front, could only have my two front teeth. I could wish you merry. I did the first one they ever did. Uh, I mean Fred and I uh 1957, I think 234567. The entertainment is spectacular. There was music for everybody like the Motown, you know. And then they had the band for the, for the rest of son. Oh no, it makes me feel good to see all the people come together and have a great time. Stranger to the dark because we don't want your broken part tamed of score. They say no, that we get to enjoy each other. We get the laugh and, and and pretend we're dancing. Whether we can dance or not, you know, it's a chance to get out and like I said, just tell your friends, it's just fun. It means that I'm even though at my age and not out in the public of working anymore, that I'm not forgotten and it's just nice knowing that they care enough senior citizens about the senior citizens. Yeah, this is something I look forward to every year, brings out the christmas spirit in you. It's just wonderful to me. It kind of makes me think that Raleigh parks and rec and everyone that's involved care enough about us to celebrate the season with us now. You can't ask for anything no better than that.
