CARY, N.C. — A German couple is bringing recipes dating back generations to an entirely new audience.

Norbert and Annelore Gstattenbauer started sharing their recipes as vendors at the N.C. State Farmer's Market in 2007.

Ten years later, they opened Annelore's German Bakery at 308 W. Chatham St. in Cary.

Good food and beverage does run in the family. Annelore Gstattenbauer’s family has owned and operated a brewery in a small village near Ulm, Germany since 1665. Eventually they expanded the business to include a restaurant and bed and breakfast.

German pastries are not as sweet as American ones, instead incorporating fruit and nuts to add balance.

Some of the bakery's signature items include its pretzels (cheese and Bavarian), Bee Sting (a custard filled almond cake topped with caramelized nuts) and its Prinzregententorte (a seven layer sponge cake with chocolate buttercream and one thin layer of apricot jam under a chocolate ganache).

Annelore's German Bakery is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
