DURHAM, N.C. — The 25th annual Full Frame Documentary Film Festival will be entirely virtual in 2022.

Event organizers announced Wednesday that the festival would be held online due to the "ongoing and unpredictable realities of the coronavirus pandemic."

“Nothing can replace the magic of screening films together in a theater, yet we firmly believe the decision to stay online for one more year is the best choice for Full Frame at this time,” Full Frame artistic director and interim festival director Sadie Tillery said. “The 2021 festival demonstrated that the Full Frame team can produce a meaningful virtual experience amid the constraints of this moment–one that matters to filmmakers, to audiences, and to us.”

The 2022 festival will follow a similar format as the 2021 event with feature and short film screenings, filmmaker Q&As and panel discussions. There will also be a juried awards program offering cash prizes of more than $40,000.

The annual festival, which is an internationally recognized, Academy Award qualifying event, will be held April 7-10, 2022. Full Frame is a program of the Center for Documentary Studies (CDS) at Duke University.

“Full Frame has always been about showcasing exceptional films with stories that can inspire and connect audiences, even in a virtual landscape,” CDS director Opeyemi Olukemi said. ”We look forward to gathering together again in downtown Durham when it is safe to do so, but I know that the 2022 online festival will still be a great celebration of nonfiction film and artists.”

Festival passes go on sale to the public in early March.
