DURHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A man has been charged with murder in connection with the death of a man who was killed in a multi-vehicle crash in Durham County on March 30, authorities said.

Moises Hernandez San Juan, 20, of Roxboro appeared in court on Tuesday for a preliminary hearing. He was ordered to return to court on April 30.

Isaac Xavier Shuler, of Durham, was traveling south on U.S. Highway 501 near Harris Mill Road around midnight when a northbound Ford Expedition crossed the median and struck Shuler’s vehicle and another vehicle head-on.

Several people were rushed for medical treatment to Duke Hospital, where Shuler died.

A preliminary investigation found that alcohol contributed to the crash, authorities said.

Charges against the suspect were upgraded from aggravated felony death by motor vehicle to second-degree murder

Shuler worked at RSI Residential Services, Inc. in Chapel Hill, providing support and care for people with disabilities, the company's operations director said.

"We are in shock in trying to understand this," Jeffrey Ryan said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
