No broken bones, but concussion for Robeson County deputy struck by vehicle on I-95

A Robeson County sheriff’s deputy was struck by a vehicle while redirecting traffic off of Interstate 95 overnight Thursday.

Sheriff Burnis Wilkins posted on Facebook that Detective Stephen Matthew Lassiter, 31 of Lumberton, was diverting traffic from Interstate 95 South at exit 33 when he was struck by a Ford truck at 12:05 a.m.

Lassiter was airlifted to McLeod Medical Center in Florence, South Carolina, with a severe head trauma, Wilkins said.

Wilkins updated Lassiter's condition Friday afternoon to say he had no broken bones, but had suffered a concussion.

The driver of the truck, Lawrence Adair, of Hope Mills, was charged with failing to reduce speed.

Traffic was being diverted because construction crews were working on a bridge on I-95.
