DURHAM, N.C. — A Read-A-Palooza Summer Learning Block Party is scheduled for Friday in Durham to highlight how important it is for kids to keep learning in the summer.

The event is set for 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, July 12, at the W.G. Pearson Center, 600 E. Umstead St. It's sponsored by Durham's Campaign for Grade-Level Reading and Durham 150 and hosted by Book Harvest, a local nonprofit that distributes books to kids in need.

Gov. Roy Cooper proclaimed this week, July 8 to July 13, as Summer Learning Week in North Carolina, highlighting the importance summer plays in children’s school achievement and calling on communities to champion summer learning, according to Durham's Partnership for Children.

"In summer, students from low-income families can lose academic gains made during the previous school year at a higher rate than their peers," the partnership says. "While students tend to progress at the same rate during the school year, more than 80 percent of children from economically disadvantaged families lose reading skills over the summer. Summer learning losses accumulate each year to impact third grade reading proficiency. In fact, some research suggests that summer learning loss may account for as much as 80 percent of the income-based achievement gap."

Friday's event includes pictures with Clifford and Dogman, activities, games and snacks, and free books for participants to take home.
