HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — After years of planning, the state Department of Transportation is preparing to widen Interstate 40 in Orange County.

I-40 has three lanes in each direction between Durham and Chapel Hill, but it shrinks to two lanes west of Exit 270, the U.S. Highway 15/501 interchange.

The evening commute is especially rough on westbound drivers traffic leaving Durham and Research Triangle Park squeezes into those two lanes.

The DOT plans to add a third lane in each direction for the 11-plus miles between the Durham/Orange county line and Interstate 85 in Hillsborough.

Work begins next year and should be finished in 2025.

Meanwhile, crews are widening I-40 through Garner. When both projects are completed, drivers will have at least three lanes in either direction of I-40 from Johnston County all the way to Greensboro.
