Disney Store reopens at Crabtree Valley Mall

The store, which was closed for three months, went through a major overhaul. The old layout and design, which featured large Disney characters at the entrance and the mountain of plush toys and big screen at the back, are completely gone.

In their place, you'll find the latest generation in Disney Store design. There's a path sparkled with "pixie dust" that weaves around the store and ends at a small space with a big screen and large tablets where shoppers can select scenes to watch or take part in regular programs.

Among the Disney princess dresses, kids can walk through a pink castle. Three large, clear tree cutouts include Disney characters hiding among the leaves.

The design also has a Triangle touch. Near the ceiling, look for local landmarks such as the State Capitol, Dorton Arena and the Duke Energy Center for Performing Arts and the Disney characters that are peppered among them.

The new store also has a special daily opening ceremony. Each day, a guest will be invited to "unlock the imagination of the store" with a large key.

Store manager Denise Schardt said the store will have daily programs though they haven't set an exact schedule. A sign at the theater will include the day's activities. The programs include storytimes, trivia and drawing. Another called "Showtime" often features Disney Junior characters.

While a store employee will help with the programs, most will involve pre-recorded pieces. So, for instance, Cinderella might lead a storytime on the screen in the theater. Schardt said the store also will have regular spontaneous programs too.

"You never know what might be happening when you come to the store," she said.

The Disney Store is on the lower level at Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh next to Build-A-Bear Workshop and Clarks.

A big grand opening celebration is set for 10 a.m., May 9. The May 9 celebration includes free gifts for the first 500 guests. From noon to 4 p.m., May 9, shoppers can meet Donald and Daisy Duck in the promo court for photos.
