I can ALWAYS go for a piece of pie. And, thankfully for me, so can my daughters.

So, when we're out and about and there's some great pie place nearby, we go out of our way to get there. A few weeks ago, we checked out The Pie Hole in Durham. Part of a Los Angeles-based pie chain, The Pie Hole opened on Ninth Street a few months ago and has been reeling in pie lovers ever since.

Young and Surelyne Lee of Cary own and operate the location. The Pie Hole was created by mother and son duo Becky Grasley and Matthew Heffner, according to a WRAL.com Out & About story about the shop just before it opened. The two wanted to open a restaurant that celebrated their love of pie, so they teamed up with family friend Sean Brennan and Matty’s wife Lindsay Hollister in an effort to bring back the “all-American pie shop.” Pies are made from scratch daily. The shop also has some great coffee.
The Pie Hole features standard favorites - like cherry pie - along with more modern recipes - such as Earl Grey tea or Mexican chocolate. There's also a savory side to the business with turkey pot pies, shepherd's pot pie or mac 'n cheese pot pie (which I hear is amazing). But, when in Durham, I've learned to pace myself. So we stuck with the dessert pies during our visit.

We got three slices - the double crust tart cherry pie, the Mexican chocolate and the peppermint chip.

Let your mouth water for a second ...

Here's the peppermint chip pie, which had just the right combination of peppermint and mint, and a hot chocolate.

The Mexican chocolate pie, which was so chocolatey it was too rich to eat in one sitting. There's nothing light about this one.

And the double crust tart cherry pie, which wasn't goopy like some cherry pies, but perfectly set with just the right amount of tart and sweet. Lucky for me, my daughter's don't like cherry pie, so this one was all for me.

The slices aren't giant, which is fine with me. Again, I like to pace myself, especially when surrounded by all of the amazing food options in Durham. And it can get a little pricey. Dessert pie slices generally hover around $5.75 to $6.75. Savory pie slices are $7.25.

This is a casual order-at-the-counter kind of restaurant with plenty of seating inside and a little bit outside. It's definitely kid friendly with pie, of course, and also hot chocolate and fresh lemonade, among other options.

The Pie Hole is at 810 Ninth St., Durham.

Go Ask Mom features places to take kids every Friday.
