RALEIGH, N.C. — With snow and icy patches still on the ground and temperatures below freezing, roughly 650 marathoners lined up for the second annual Raleigh Half Marathon at Crabtree Creek.

"Hopefully Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020 will provide some cooler weather than the unexpectedly humid day we had last year," said officials on the event's Facebook page. With below-freezing temperatures Saturday morning, the organizers certainly got their wish. Runners were bundled in coats, scarves and toboggans.

This year, the marathon took place by the Crabtree Creek Greenway, starting by the recently developed Gateway Plaza Raleigh, then running to Anderson Point Park and back. An estimated 800 runners registered, according to organizers. Even with the bitter cold and icy roads, the majority still showed up.

Raleigh Half Marathon results

Sarah Rapp was the woman's winner, with a time of 1:15:02.

She broke the old record, which was 1:18:04. The old record was held by Rapp herself. She broke her own record by around three minutes.

The men's winner was Sam Montclair, with a time of 1:07:54.

Organizers said they spent all day yesterday ensuring the pathway would be clear and safe for runners, pouring sand and salt on the greenway to prevent icy build up, so the runners could enjoy a safe marathon on Saturday morning.

All finishers received a unique 2020 Raleigh Half Marathon Finisher’s medal, and the Top 75 Men and Top 75 Women overall received hand made Raleigh Half Marathon Change Dish from Porch Dog Pots.
