CHAPEL HILL, N.C. β€” Drivers on Franklin Street will notice a change in traffic pattern along an already-busy stretch of road in Chapel Hill beginning Monday.

The weeks-long resurfacing project is good news for cyclists in Chapel Hill, who will be getting more designated bike lanes.

Utility work begins Monday, and resurfacing and re-painting the road should wrap up around mid-June.

The bike lanes, known as curb-running bike lanes, will be next to the curb, where there is on-street parking, and will run between parked cars and the curb. The one exception is the area in front of the Carolina Square apartments, where bike lanes will be between parked cars and traffic.

In the last year, there have been a number of bicycle accidents in the area known for cyclist and pedestrian traffic. The new designated bike lanes could help.

The Merritt Mill Road intersection will have five lanes until the project is complete.
