Three bystanders helped Durham County deputies wrestle a hit-and-run suspect to the ground, body camera video shows.
Posted — UpdatedDurham County deputies say Blake Grady killed a 61-year-old riding a bike on Dec. 4, 2022.
Three bystanders helped deputies wrestle Grady to the ground, the video shows.
After deputies get Grady into the back of the patrol car, the video reveals one of the bystanders was Grady’s father. It's not clear how or why he was there.
The video shows an exchange between Grady’s father and a deputy.
“He’s my son,” the father said in the video.
“Go back inside,” a deputy tells Grady’s father. “We got it right now.”
“Don’t let him back out,” Grady’s father said. “I mean, don’t let him out.”
Cheryl LaRobardier was the cyclist who was hit and killed, the sheriff’s office said. WRAL Investigates reached out to LaRobardier’s family members on Wednesday, but they did not want to discuss her death.
LaRobardier was an avid cyclist and had recently moved to the area.
Deputies were chasing Grady after he hit LaRobardier, and their cameras show him try to evade arrest, first in his car and then on foot.
On Mineral Springs Road, video shows Deputy Raekwon Stacker catch up with Grady and wrestle him on the ground.
“I got him on the ground,” Stacker said.
Stacker’s body camera appears to fall off.
After the bystanders stepped in to help, Deputy Shane Walker runs to the scene and Grady is handcuffed.
Someone asked Stacker through the radio, “What are the nature of the injuries?”
“Unsure. Under the influence of something,” Stacker said in the video. “He flipped his car in a ditch.”
Prosecutors said Grady admitted to using meth, heroin and marijuana.
Firefighters checked Grady's vital signs in the videos. He did not have any injuries visible.
