RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina reported 3,885 new cases of coronavirus on Saturday, a single-day record. The rolling, seven-day average also reached record territory at 2,553.

Since the pandemic began in March, the state has seen 309,118 positive tests out of more than 4.5 million tested. Of those cases, most people, almost 250,000 have recovered.

North Carolina has lost 4,756 people to the virus, with 36 new deaths reported on Saturday. Since sometime in September, more than half the deaths in the state have come from its rural counties, not its urban or suburban ones.
Positive tests for the virus followed a similar trend. Dr. Mandy Cohen, secretary of the Department of Health and Humans Services, said this week that the state has seen nearly twice as many new cases reported recently from rural counties as urban or suburban ones.

"It's particularly worrisome ... because health care can be harder to access in those communities," she said.

Across the country Friday there were 184,514 new cases, more than 30,000 more cases than had ever been reported in a single day.
