Collision with parked box truck leaves 1 dead, 2 injured

According to officials, a 2018 Dodge Caravan driven by Christopher Weathers, 33, crashed into the back of a large box truck that was parked in the right lane of Guess Road.

The box truck, which had its hazard lights on, was stopped to make a delivery.

Lashawn Daniel Jones, 43, of Raleigh was standing outside the box truck and was struck by the Weathers' vehicle. Weathers sustained minor injuries, but Jones died after being rushed to the hospital.

Jones' colleague, Desmond Sykes, 26, of Raleigh, was in the cargo area of the box truck when the crash happened. Sykes and Weathers were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Investigators cited Weathers for misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision.

The crash remains under investigation.

Guess Road was closed between Crystal Lake Road and Kirkwood Drive for approximately three hours after the crash..
