Children's consignment sales make tough decisions as pandemic enters second year

Many have decided to cancel their second or third sale in less than a year.

Consignment sale owners are making tough decisions as we move into the second year of the pandemic. While March would normally be a busy time for most of the sales, often owned by local moms or run by church groups, many have canceled or postponed any plans for the spring.

For some, this is the third sale they've had to cancel. As things shut down in March 2020, many canceled their spring sales and, then, fall sales because of COVID.

"We have made the difficult decision to cancel the Spring/Summer KidzStuff Consignment Sale this year," says an email to consignors of Kidz Stuff, a sale at Hayes Barton Baptist Church. "As the current time, Hayes Barton Baptist Church is not allowing events with more than 25-30 people indoors. Between shoppers and volunteers, we exceed those numbers at almost all the times during the week.  On our opening sales night, there are nearly twice that amount of volunteers in the gym.  While we hope that things are different by April, we have to make a decision based on conditions now."

Not all sales are canceled. Kids Everywear went on in January, as we reported. Divine Children's Sale is scheduled to take place in April in Raleigh. And Hugs & Kisses is slated to take place March in Fayetteville.

And COVID isn't the only reason why sales are scrambling. Many rented space at Cary Towne Center, which recently closed for a major overhaul. Some, however, have found an alternative location. Kids Everywear will hold a sale in both April and May at a new location — South Hills Mall in Cary.

More information about what sales are opened and closed or still figuring out their plans is on Go Ask Mom's consignment sale database.
