PITTSBORO, N.C. — After closing more than two months ago because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Carolina Tiger Rescue will reopen its gates starting June 5, according to a press release. Tickets will be available for sale starting this week.

To comply with new guidelines, the nonprofit wildlife sanctuary in Pittsboro is making a few adjustments:

  • Tours will be limited to 12 guests and a guide, who will remain six feet apart at all times.
  • Both guides and guests will be required to wear cloth masks while on site. Kids 2 and under are not required to wear a mask.
  • Shoppers will be limited inside the gift shop and a new droplet guard will be installed at the checkout counter.
  • Disinfectant procedures will be in place in between tours and throughout the day to add additional protections for visitors.

Tickets will be available for 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and twilight tours. Friday morning tours at 10 a.m. will be reserved for vulnerable members of the public. Tours take place Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

For public tours, tickets are $12.50 for kids ages 4 to 12 and $18 for ages 13 and up. Kids age 3 and under are free.

“We are really looking forward to having everyone back,” said Pam Fulk, director of Carolina Tiger Rescue, in the press release. “It’s been a long two-and-a-half months, but the support we’ve received has been overwhelming. We’re excited to be able to resume operations and continue showing visitors how important it is to care for and protect these animals.”

Since mid-March, the sanctuary has limited on-site staff to help with animal care, while volunteers and non-essential staff have worked from home, according to the release. Even still, the group has worked to provide weekly live streams to keep the public connected to the cats, as well as entertained and educated from the comfort of home.

More information is on the rescue group's website.
