We have some big book sales coming up in the next few weeks. I always head to one this time of year as I prepare for a long summer with kids.

The sales, featuring used and sometime new books for a few bucks, are great places to stock up on books to keep the kids interested in them over the summer and to grab surprises for any summer trips you have planned. We always have a few long days in the car each summer.

Here's where to find the sales:

  • The Durham Academy's Used Book Sale is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, and noon to 2 p.m., Sunday. The sale features books for all ages. On Sunday, fill a bag of books for $10. The sale is at the middle school's gym at 3116 Academy Rd., Durham. I'm told there will be some special events, including games and reading specialists.
  • Wake County Public Libraries' annual sale will be May 9 to May 12 at the Jim Graham Building at the N.C. State Fairgrounds. The annual event features more than 400,000 books for all ages. It's open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., May 9 to May 11, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 12. Events on Saturday, May 11, include family-friendly entertainment, crafts and more for kids. Children also will be invited to make a Mother's Day card. Check the website for details on pricing and deals.
  • And ... Durham County readers ... I'm sorry. Durham's annual book sale was last weekend. I had it on the wrong date on my calendar. But ... they do have mini-book sales every day at seven Durham locations: American Tobacco Campus Strickland Building, 334 Blackwell St.; East Regional Library, 211 Lick Creek Ln.; Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St.; North Regional Library, 221 Milton Rd.; South Regional Library, 4505 Alston Ave.; Southwest Regional Library, 3605 Shannon Rd.; and Stanford L. Warren Branch, 1201 Fayetteville St. Checks and cash only.

If you know of other used book sales across the region, please share in the comments below.
