It's time to think about summer reading - and, in my humble opinion, the second best place to stock up on inexpensive books (after borrowing them from the library itself) is a library book sale.

Here, you can pick up for dozens of books for pennies on the dollar - and fill up your bookshelves with great reads that will keep you and the family busy during the long summer months ahead of us.

There are a couple of big book sales coming up. Here's when they are.

Durham Book Sale

The Friends of Durham Library will host a book sale from noon to 4 p.m., April 28, at the Books Among Friends space in Northgate Mall. Members can shop from 10 a..m. to noon, April 28 - and memberships are for sale at the door if you want to shop early (and get the best deals).

Also on April 28 at Northgate, the Durham County Library and Book Harvest will celebrate Dia de los Ninos, or Children's Day, which will include a children's book swap from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the mall's Children's Alleyway. It's free and open to the public.

Families are invited to bring infant, children’s and teen books they have already read and swap out others, all for free, according to a press release. Kids are invited to make crafts, play with robots, listen to stories, watch dances from around the world and take home free books!

Wake County Book Sale

The massive Wake County Public Libraries book sale is May 3 to May 6 at the NC State Fairgrounds in west Raleigh. Hours will be 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., May 3, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., May 4 to May 6.

Book prices will be $4 for hardbound books and $2 for paperbacks, children's books and media. Prices drop each day as the sale continues. On Friday, there's a buy one get one free deal. On Saturday, the BOGO deal continues, and prices drop to $2 for hardbound books and $1 for everything else. And Sunday is bargain day. Get a box of books for just $3.

Chapel Hill Library Bookstore

In Chapel Hill, the book sale was last weekend, but the Friends of the Chapel Hill Public Library operates a bookstore on the library's lower level. Hours are noon to 6 p.m., Monday through Wednesday, and 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Thursday through Sunday.

Happy hunting!
