Big switch: Capital Boulevard ramp to close as new route opens
Major changes are underway Tuesday for drivers who travel in and out of downtown using Capital Boulevard.
Posted — UpdatedThe ramp that comes down onto Peace from Capital Boulevard will close permanently Tuesday night to southbound traffic.
It will be replaced by a new exit south of the bridge that will take drivers onto to Johnson and Harrington streets before reaching Peace Street at a new stoplight.
Drivers should also prepare for another change on Capital Boulevard next week, as the Wade Avenue Bridge will closed for up to six months.
"On Oct. 8, contractors will be beginning work on the Wade Avenue flyover ramp, which is designed to connect northbound Capital Boulevard traffic with westbound Wade Avenue," according to a press release from the NCDOT. "The work will require the closure of the existing Wade Avenue on/off ramp to allow the contractor space to install the new flyover ramps to the new bridge at that location."
Message boards will be displayed to get inbound and outbound drivers around using Peace, Glenwood and Wade.
These changes come as crews work to replace the bridge at Peace and Wade and add several improvements along Capital Boulevard.
