MORRISVILLE, N.C. — The Civil Air Patrol will host an open house this Sunday to share information about how anybody - ages 12 and up - can get involved.

The Civil Air Patrol was created in 1941 to protect the nation's shoreline during World War II. Today, 56,000 men, women and children are members, helping during disasters and providing other aid to the military and those in need.

At the same time, the group builds awareness about aviation and fields such as aerospace and STEM education. Kids as young as 12 can get involved. In North Carolina, there are squadrons across the state.

I wrote about the program last year when I featured Chris Bailey, a local father and longtime CAP volunteer.

Sunday's open house runs noon to 3 p.m. at the NC Department of Transportation Division of Aviation, 1050 Meridian Dr. at Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

During the event, you can meet CAP pilots, aircrew and cadets and find out what it's like to volunteer with the program. Activities include flying, leadership development, summer activities, academic scholarships and more. You'll also get to sit in a plane and learn how to flight plan a real mission, according to the description. Free parking and refreshments will be available.

More information is on the Raleigh Wake Civil Air Patrol's website. This could be a great opportunity for teens interested in aviation and service.
