Another recall, standards for bath seats announced

It's a busy week for recalls and news from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

On Thursday, the agency recalled about 350,000 woven trunks sold only at Target. And it also issued new standards on baby bath seats.

The woven storage trunks sold at Target pose a strangulation hazard. The lid of the trunk can drop suddenly when released. There are at least two injuries, including a report of an 18-month-old suffering brain damage when the lid came down on the back of her neck and pinned her throat against the rim of the trunk.

The agency also approved a new federal safety standard for infant bath seats. The new requirements add stricter stability requirements to prevent the seat from tipping over, tighter leg openings to keep kids from slipping through and a larger warning label alerting parents that children shouldn't be left alone in them.

Bath seats provide front and back support to an infant, usually 5 months to 10 months, who is seated in a sink or tub.

According to the commission, from 1983 through November 2009, 174 deaths were reported involving bath seats and 300 reported non fatal bath seat incidents. Many of the deaths and incidents involve babies left unattended while bathing.

Always a good reminder that you should never leave a child alone even in small amounts of water. Always have them within arms reach.
