Linden woman: Storm took mother's life

Priscilla Lindbom, 47, said she lived next door to her aging and ailing parents to help them out. She took them lunch on Saturday and was visiting with Dorothy Chambers, 82, and Grady Chambers, 78, at their home at 3467 Vault Field Road when the storm hit. 

"I was going to go back home, but the weather got bad, so I decided to stay with them," she said.

Lindbom said the family heard a loud noise and the home began to shake. It flipped and traveled more than 100 feet, she said. The trio was tossed with it.

Lindbom said she found her father alert and breathing, but by the time she got to her mother, she had died. Dorothy Chambers died in the rubble. 

The Chambers had been married for more than 50 years. He is a retired Army sergeant major, and they are the parents of three. They had lived in the Fayetteville area for more than 30 years.

"You never know. It took only seconds," Lindbom said. "One minute mom was there, the next minute she wasn't."

Grady Chambers was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he was being treated for a head injury and a broken collar bone. Lindbom was treated for minor injuries.
