CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Dan Reichart, the UNC-Chapel Hill professor who was injured in the Davie Poplar tree fire and explosion on Thursday, told multiple media outlets he had been on his way to get an ice cream bar when he came upon the tree fire.

Because of the incident, Reichart obviously never got his ice cream.

The nutrition team at the UNC Medical Center delivered a "bouquet of ice cream bars" to Reichart as he heals from his injuries.

The ice cream bars were delivered with the message, “You earned this. Compliments of UNC Health Care.”

Reichart was burned on his face and arms. Students tried to help by tossing water on him.

Video footage shows Reichart sitting on the ground as first responders rushed over.

The Davie Poplar tree is located in McCorkle Place near the Old Well on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. Arborists inspected the tree on Friday and said it will be OK.
