Soldier crashes into mobile home, charged with DWI

State troopers said that Michael Anthony Almendarez, 36, was driving a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee east on Chapel Hill Road around 4:30 a.m. when he ran off the road to the right at Balsawood Circle. Almendarez over-corrected and went off the left side of  the road.

The Jeep struck a fire hydrant, which caused it to flip over at least once, troopers said. The Jeep crashed into a mobile home and came to a rest on its passenger side, facing west.

Almendarez and his passenger suffered minor injuries, and no one inside the mobile home was hurt.

Troopers said the crash caused an estimated $15,000 worth of damage to the mobile home. The owner, Delton Wilson, said that wreck took off the back of the home and that the Red Cross was helping him.

Troopers arrested released the passenger at the scene and arrested Almendarez. In a Breathalyzer test administered three hours after wreck, he had 0.09 blood-alcohol-content level.

Almendarez faces charges of driving while impaired, careless and reckless driving, and driving without a license. Troopers said he carried a Texas drivers' license, but it was marked with a no-renewal status.
