FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — Fuquay-Varina police have canceled a Silver Alert Sunday for two missing elderly men who have cognitive impairments.

Major Michelangelo Boyd, 73, and Joseph Alexander Boyd, 69, were reported missing from a house at 1921 Beckwood Court early Sunday morning.

The Silver Alert was issued shortly after noon canceled about three hours later when both men were found safe. They had gotten lost while trying to driving to Raleigh and wound up in Emporia, Va., police said.

Developed in 2007, the Silver Alert system quickly notifies the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
