RALEIGH, N.C. — Authorities destroyed more than 20 million dosage units of opioids and other prescription medications in a statewide collection of unused drugs.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said it delivered on Thursday more than 13 tons of prescription pills to be incinerated. The total broke the record for a single Operation Medicine Drop event, which is held twice each year.

“This amount, 26,991 pounds, breaks the record for a one-time event as well as for yearly totals,” said John Keane, special agent in charge of the SBI’s Diversion and Environmental Crimes Unit. “This was a huge success in getting dangerous opioids out of people’s medicine cabinets and away from children and those with drug addictions.”

The program started in 2007 and expanded statewide in 2009. Since 2013, the program has collected and destroyed almost 150,000 pounds of drugs.
