Raleigh's population skews young

Raleigh’s percentage of residents under age 15 increased by 45 percent between 2000 and 2010, demographer William Frey of the Brookings Institution’s Public Policy Research Center said. That growth is second nationwide, Frey said, with the rate in Provo, Utah, increasing by 48 percent.

Charlotte tied with McAllen, Texas, at sixth in Frey's rankings, at 33 percent. Fort Myers, Fla., Austin, Texas, and Las Vegas rounded out the top five.

Frey found that residents under age 15 increased by 25 percent or more in 10 metropolitan areas across the South and the Mountain West because of high rates of births and in-migration.
