RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh City Council members on Tuesday approved a proposal that would limit the amount of time residents can leave their garbage on the curb for pickup.

Current regulations allow garbage bins, recycling containers and yard waste to be placed at the curb between noon the day before the collection and 7 a.m. the day of collection. Those bins, or any uncollected waste, must be removed by 7 p.m. the day after collection.

Under the revision, residents would place carts at the curb no earlier than sundown the day before collection, and collect them by sunrise on the day after collection.

City officials said attached dwellings with more than five units must use private collection services and would no longer qualify for city pickup under the new rules. They also plan to ask for money to hire additional solid waste code enforcement officers next year.

The city currently has two code enforcement officers responsible for container violations. Greensboro and Durham have three each, city leaders said.

The changes do not take effect until council votes to accept them.
