RALEIGH, N.C. — Even if you're not cold, experts say everyone should turn their heat on at least once in October.

The reason? If you wait until winter hits and your system does not work, you could end up stuck in the cold as technicians address a spike in service requests.

Don't worry if you notice a burning smell when you turn on your heat -- the smell should be temporary and is likely from dust collected in hotter months.

It's a good idea to replace your air filter at least once a month in the winter to help air flow freely.

If your furnace is in your garage, move items around that could cause a fire.

Finally, if you use a space heater, don't place it too close to bed linens, couches or chairs. The heaters are known to cause fires when not used properly.
