FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A man was taken into custody Thursday afternoon after shooting his mother at a Fayetteville spa, according to police.

Authorities said 24-year-old Kevin Tyrone Powell, Jr. of the 3800 block of Brook Green Drive, shot his mother in the face near the D’aviance Spa in the Showroom Square shopping center at 1111 Ireland Drive at about 2 p.m.

The mother was later identified as Derema Burch, 44, of the 3800 block of Brook Green Drive.

Police said Powell was taken into custody after returning to the scene while his mother, who was an employee at the spa, was getting first aid treatment. He was charged with attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Powell was being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center under $750,000 secured bond.

Burch was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and was later airlifted to UNC Hospitals at Chapel Hill. She was listed in critical but stable condition. Nobody else was hurt.

Powell was a former standout basketball player at Seventy-First High School in Fayetteville.

Although investigators believe the shooting was an isolated incident, several merchants in the area said they aren't taking any chances and are talking about beefing up security in the strip mall.
