RED SPRINGS, N.C. — A Red Springs man was charged late Thursday with killing his girlfriend, whom authorities investigating a traffic accident found dead inside a car he was driving, police said.

Kevin Marshell Robinson, 23, of 58 Beck St., was charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was being held Friday without bond in the Robeson County Jail.

Police said Robinson argued with his girlfriend, Melanie Diana Ray, 24, as they sat in her car at 103 Manus St. in Red Springs at about 7 p.m. Thursday. Robinson shot Ray once in the head and drove off, police said.

Robinson was involved in accident on N.C. Highway 211 between W.D. Locklear and West Carthage roads west of Lumberton. When Robeson County deputies and Highway Patrol troopers responded to the accident scene, they found Ray's body inside the car, police said.

The case remains under investigation.
