Next phase of lane shifts complete in Fortify zone near I-40/440 split
More lane shifts were completed Tuesday morning in the Fortify work zone in southeast Raleigh, allowing drivers to use newly paved lanes near the Interstate 40/Interstate 440 split.
Posted — UpdatedDrivers in the two lanes that enter the Fortify zone will now be on new inside lanes for about a half mile before returning to the outside lanes of the highway, state Department of Transportation officials said.
Additionally, the single lane of I-440 East that merges onto I-40 West in the area now extends about a quarter mile as it approaches the exit for Rock Quarry Road.
The shift was the third in recent weeks. More are scheduled through the summer, with all traffic expected to be on 8.5 miles of new interstate by the fall, officials said.
After each shift happens, crews will begin tearing up the outside lanes of the highway.
