Edgecombe educator named regional 'Teacher of the Year'

Edgecombe County Public Schools' "Teacher of the Year" has been selected as the state’s North Central Region Teacher of the Year.

TARBORO, N.C. — Edgecombe County Public Schools' "Teacher of the Year" has been selected as the state’s North Central Region Teacher of the Year.

At 11 a.m. Monday, representatives from the state Department of Public Instruction surprised English teacher Matthew Bristow-Smith at a school assembly to let him know about the honor.

Bristow-Smith was selected from 15 local candidates and advanced to the regional level to become a finalist in the North Central Region that includes Nash, Wake, Wilson and other large metro counties.

He is one of eight regional teachers who are under consideration for the honor of North Carolina Teacher of the Year.
