More Women Choosing to Have Children and Work

According to the census bureau, 55 percent of women between the ages of15 and 44 went back to work within a year of giving birth. The census alsoshows those couples having children are having fewer.

Part of the reason for that may be the expense and difficulty coupleshave finding daycare. The census also found that women who have only onechild, or who have a college degree are more likely to go back to work,but the decision to have a family is one more women are opting not to makeat all. The census report notes that the number of women remainingchildless nearly doubled, from 10 percent to 18 percent.

Working mothers are under more stress than other working women. DukeUniversity Researchers say the extra pressure causes a variety ofmeasurable health problems. More kids do not necessarily mean more stress.In many cases, the study shows, one child is enough.

Surprisingly, neither income nor marital status is an additional stressfactor for working mothers.
