A fraternity-sponsored show and dance went off without a hitch at the University of North Carolina Saturday night -- until shots rang out from a passing car as the audience was dispersing. Shon Chambers, 24, was shot in the legs. Police have charged three people. No one involved is a UNC student.
Chambers, who lives in Durham, was admitted to UNC Hospital.
Witnesses said a red Honda sped by the front of Carmichael Auditorium about 1:30 a.m., just as the dance that followed a "Greek Freak" show was breaking up. The show, sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, was a "step show," featuring the dancing of various fraternities and sororities.
Police advised officers to be on the lookout for the car. It was stopped on Highway 54 shortly after the shooting, for suspected DWI on the part of the driver.
Subsequently, the driver, Plimpton Robinson, 24, of Raleigh was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He is being held in Orange County jail on $50,000 bond. Police have released no information on a motive for the shooting.
Also charged were two passengers in the Robinson car, also from Raleigh. Zell Harris, Jr., and Anthony McEachin were charged with aiding and abetting. They were released on unsecured bonds.
Although no university students were involved in the incident, tomorrow campus police will meet with university officials to review campus access on the part of non-students
