Robbery Plays Out at Cary Movie Theater

Posted — Updated

CARY — A real life drama is playing out at a movie theatre in Cary. Police are looking for two men in connection with an armed robbery Thursday night.

Police believe the two are responsible for a series of robberies in the Cary area.

The latest robbery happened Thursday at the Carmike Waverly Cinemas off Tryon road. Cary police say an armed man robbed the ticket office and the concessions area. When two employees tried to confront him in the parking lot, he fired one shot.

"Of course, both of them jumped for cover," Cary Police Lt. Steve Lee said. "The shot went wild and went in through the back window of a car sitting in the parking lot. We've recovered the bullet - fragments of the bullet."

Cary police believe the gunman had an accomplice waiting for him in a car behind the building. The suspects are believed to be the same two who have robbed 11 other locations in Cary over the past four months. Those businesses include Pizza Hut, Subway and a Blockbuster video where a surveillance tape was made.

Cary police say all of the businesses were struck around closing time, between 9 and 11 o'clock at night. And in almost every case, two locations in different parts of town were robbed in the same night.

Police say one of the suspects is usually polite, and the other aggressive, which has some Cary residents concerned.

"I'm sure with our police department, they'll be on top of it, but like anybody else, we hate to see it come to our town, our area," resident Mary Ann Wilson said.

Anyone confronted by the suspects is urged to cooperate. Police say they have fired their gun once, and probably will not hesitate to do it again.

Anyone with information about the two suspects, should call the Cary police. There is a $2,500 reward.
