Las Vegas May Cash In On N.C.'s Furniture Market Success

Posted — Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — With billions of dollars of business at stake, state leaders hope what happens in Vegas does not stay in Vegas.

North Carolina currently holds the title of the largest furniture market in the world, but on Monday, Las Vegas opened the World Market Center, a furniture market in a new 10-story building.

That market will eventually include more than 12 million square feet of showroom space. High Point has 11 million.

North Carolina's furniture industry represents nearly 3 percent of all wages in the state. The industry's economic impact is $8 billion a year.

Las Vegas officials have denied that they are trying to take the market away from the Tar Heel state.
