Raeford Man Accused Of Shooting Realtor Is Bipolar, Family Says

Authorities said June McCoy shot real estate agent Kathleen Yaggi three times Thursday morning when she arrived at a mobile home where McCoy was staying. Investigators said McCoy told Yaggi that he wanted to see a property.

Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin said McCoy allegedly attacked Yaggi in the yard and shot her when she tried to run. Then, he barricaded himself inside the mobile home for hours and shot himself, officials said.

Yaggi, police said, was able to use her cell phone to call 911.

The suspect's cousin said McCoy is bipolar and had not been taking his medication. He believes that is what allegedly set off the 21-year-old.

"They said he hadn't been taking the medicine in about three months, because all of his bottles were still filled," said McCoy's cousin, John Alford.

The family also said that McCoy had been in and out of Dorothea Dix Hospital getting treatment for his condition. Most recently, they said McCoy had just gotten a job and liked to teach. Lately though, they said he had been agitated.

"He kept saying people were bothering him around here, so I guess he was stressed out," said another cousin, Jamar Alford. "I don't see why he called a real estate agent. I don't get it."

Investigators said that McCoy had tried to lure at least two other real estate agents to his home before Yaggi went there.

McCoy was convicted on a communicating threats charge in 2000. Investigators said that was his only criminal record. Family members said McCoy does not even own a gun.

Yaggi moved to Fayetteville with her military husband three years ago. He co-workers said she has a love for people and was very giving.

Both Yaggi and McCoy are being treated at Cape Fear Medical Center. Yaggi's condition was upgraded Friday to good. McCoy is still listed in critical condition, but is responding by moving his hand, officials said.
