RALEIGH, N.C. — Police pulled a bullet from the wall inside a Cameron Village store following the Monday shooting death of a woman at the Raleigh shopping center, according to search warrants released Friday.

Kathleen Ann Bertrand was shot several times as she reported to work at Pier 1 Imports. Investigators say that her ex-husband, Christopher Bertrand, was responsible for the crime. He committed suicide hours later.

In addition to the bullet recovered inside Handpicked, a Cameron Village gift shop, search warrants show that investigators found a gun holster, a .40-caliber bullet, a utility knife and miscellaneous papers inside Christopher Bertrand's 1997 Toyota Tercel parked outside the store.

Police seized four journals from Kathleen Bertrand's 2007 Nissan Versa and two laptop computers, various documents and a spiral notebook from her Cary apartment, according to search warrants.

Court documents indicate that Kathleen Bertrand had sought out a domestic violence protective order in the past because her husband harassed her to the point that she and her three children went into hiding.

Stephanie Francis, a social worker with Interact of Wake County, a nonprofit that assists victims of domestic violence, says protective orders are an important step of a greater safety plan that someone needs when trying to escape an abusive relationship.

"Protective orders are very important, and they are very helpful – and for many people, getting a protective order in place will help keep them safe," she said. "It is important to understand that, if a person is determined to harm another person, they're going to find ways to do that."
