ZEBULON, N.C. — An early morning chase in Zebulon ended with a fatal crash.

Wake County authorities said David Regi, 33, of Zebulon, took off as a sheriff's deputy tried to make a routine traffic stop at 3:23 a.m.

A chase ensued and Regi crashed a short time later at Wakefield Street near Barbee Street.

Officials say Regi was driving a stolen green 1996 Ford minivan from Johnston County.

During the chase, Regi was reportedly traveling at speeds up to 85 mph in a 35 mph zone. He died after being transported to a local hospital.

The deputy was not injured.
