RALEIGH, N.C. — Last-day-of-school activities turned into an ordeal that a local family still is dealing with five months later.

Should a school be held responsible when a student gets hurt on the school grounds during a school activity? Yes No Depends on the circumstances

Ligon Middle School student Linda Le broke her neck playing tug of war. The injury, specifically a cracked verterbrae, is listed as a "fracture" on medical documents.

Le is better now after wearing a neck brace all summer. But medical bills total $3,000-$4,000, and Le's mother, Thao, does not have insurance.

Thao Le thought the school district would be financially responsible. But that is not the news she received. There was no evidence the school was responsible, so it declined payment.
